CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Abstract
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is one of the crucial strategies that companies which
succeed and flourish in the competitive business environment employ. There is a great difference
between the organizations that practice CSR and those that do not because Corporate Social
Responsibility has a significant impact on both the business and society. Therefore, the aspect of
CSR is of great importance in any field, business, or company that provides services to the society
for profit gains.
CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
3
Introduction
Corporate social responsibility is simply the responsibility or initiatives taken by the
organization to assess its impact on the society and the environment. In other words, CSR is the
extra efforts taken by the company to give back some portion of its benefits to the society with an
aim of promoting the welfare of the surrounding community (Cavico, 2013). This is very important
because the business that is focused on making profit only is at risk of failing in today’s
competitive business environment that is being driven by technology, creativity, and innovation.
This is because the customers always have a preference towards the organizations or companies
that have their interests at heart i.e. those organizations that address some of the prevailing needs
in the society. Therefore, this implies that the organizations that have effective CSR initiatives are
the ones that are likely to flourish in the competitive environment rather than those that are profit
oriented. Therefore, in today’s competitive world, each organization in any field has the
responsibility of working an extra mile in promoting CSR.
The essence of the topic and justification of the research question
The general purpose or significance of this topic is to illustrate the importance of
addressing the needs of society in any field that is profit oriented. This is because the society we
live today is full of various challenges that need a collective effort from all the stakeholder in
addressing them. Some of the challenges that are being faced by today’s society include increasing
poverty level, the emergence of epidemics and other infectious diseases, increasing number of
needy individuals such as the orphans and widows, environmental pollution, the emergency of
disasters such as fire outbreak and floods, etc. All these needs demand a collective initiative from
all stakeholders of good heart. Therefore, since these challenges directly affect the society
members who form part of the stakeholders in organizations or businesses, it is very important for

any business that has the public interest at heart to come up with effective CSR initiatives that can
assist in addressing some of these needs. Through this initiative, the business would be promoting
the welfare of the common people in the society rather than being profit minded. Thus, it is
important and beneficial for any organization that serves the public in any field to prioritize
addressing some of the needs in the surrounding community such that it can gain a positive public
perception that can give it a competitive advantage (Bluze et al, 2015).
On the other hand, this topic is significant given the fact that Corporate Social
Responsibility (CSR) has numerous benefits to the business. Some of the benefits of CSR to the
business include building of a brand image that enhances a positive perception from the public
who are the potential customers, motivation of the employees as a result of promotion of their
welfare and this increases productivity, good relations with the stakeholders including the
customers, suppliers, shareholders etc., mitigation of possible risks such as stiff competition from
rival businesses and high rate of employee turnover that could impact the operations and
profitability of the business, avoidance of regulations from the government as a result of adhering
to the set rules pertaining safety and mitigation of pollution, improves the loyalty of the customers
due to a positive perception of the company’s image, increase in revenue and profit due to
attraction of more customers from the surrounding community etc. Therefore, these benefits of
CSR to the business can make it flourish in any environment.
Additionally, another essence of this topic is to illustrate how the community benefits from
the CSR initiatives. This is very important because challenges are inevitable in any society and the
addressing some of these needs automatically improves the welfare of the society. Some of the
benefits of CSR to the society include protection of natural environment due to pollution mitigation
policies and initiatives such as planting of trees, education of bright but needy children who come

from the families with a humble background, general economic development of the society due to
initiatives such as economic empowerment programs, improved living standards, provision of
employment opportunities, etc. All these benefits to the society help to promote the brand image
of the business thereby attracting more customers into the business. Therefore, this gives a business
with efficient CSR policies an advantage over the others.
Finally, the research question selected for this topic focus on the perception of the youths
aged below thirty years towards a business that great CSR policies. The research question is
appropriate to this topic because the goal of CSR in any society is to improve the economic status
of the surrounding individuals and at the same time improving the reputation of the organization
by building up a good public image since the consumers would always develop a perception or
feeling about the initiatives that the organization is undertaking in the community. For instance, if
the organization is undertaking economic projects such sponsoring the needy students,
empowerment of youths and women, development of infrastructure, etc., then the beneficiaries of
these projects would automatically spread the good news concerning such an organization.
Moreover, the research question focuses on young individuals who form the biggest portion of the
consumers. The youths are the potential beneficiaries of the CSR initiatives undertaken by the
organization because they form a bigger portion of the needy individuals in the society, hence,
they require more economic empowerment.
The relevance of the topic to my field of study & importance of answering the research
question
This topic is relevant to my field of study because my field deals with the interaction
offering services to the public. After completion of my studies, I would work in business-oriented
organizations that offer services to the public with an aim of making a profit. However, due to the
CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
6
nature of competition that is evident in the business environment today and the dominance of
various challenges affecting our society, Corporate Social Responsibility is one of the crucial tools
in gaining a competitive edge in the market. This would ensure that the organization is benefiting
by providing various services to the society while at the same time the society also benefits from
CSR initiatives provided by the company.
Most importantly, my field of specialization deals with direct interaction with the public,
it is also important to cater for the needs of the same public through the use of CSR initiatives such
as economic empowerment by providing loans at a low interest so that the community members
can borrow to start up the business that changes their way of life. Disaster management is also
another area that organization can employ to promote CSR. Some of the activities being carried
out by the volunteer team during cases of disaster emergency include rescue exercises, provision
of first aid to the disaster victims, provision of guiding and counseling programs to the affected
victims of the disaster and educating the community members on techniques of disaster
management such as fire output management strategies (Ravi Raman et al, 2010).
The improvement of the education standards is another area that is part of my area of
specialization. The organizations can provide mentorship programs to college and university
students all over the world, and allocate a certain portion of their revenue towards providing
sponsorship and scholarships to bright students come from very humble backgrounds. This
initiative enables millions of students from different parts of the world to access quality education.
Finally, environmental protection is another area that is directly connected with my field
of study. The CSR efforts pertaining conservation of the environment include cleaning of the
environment, protection of environmental pollution through soil conservation measures and

educating the society on issues pertaining the environment. This area is very important in any field
of study because environmental degradation has become a discussion topic globally.
On the other hand, answering the research question is very important because it outlines
the impact of corporate social responsibility to the business i.e. it can display clearly how the young
individuals who form the majority of the consumers perceive or feel about the organizations
efficient CSR policies. In addition, the answer to this research question poses a challenge to the
organizations that are profit-oriented without contribution to the welfare of the community.
Through this specific question, one can identify the impact and the importance of promoting the
welfare of the community in order to improve the people’s life status. Most importantly, the answer
to the research question would portray that any business with an ambition of succeeding in the
competitive market should put more focus on the youth who form a big portion of the potential
customers since they are the possible beneficiaries of the CSR initiatives.
How practitioners would utilize the answer to the research question to improve client
service
It is common knowledge that satisfaction of the client’s needs is the main target of any
business or organizations that aims to compete in the current market. The answer to the research
question can be utilized by the practitioners in coming up with appropriate CSR policies that
address the needs of the clients with an aim of creating a good relationship between the
organization and the clients. In addition, the answer to the research question would clearly depict
that there is a need for the organizations to go an extra mile and come up with strategies of
improving service delivery that would be beneficial to the organization. For instance, the
practitioners can come up with CSR development initiatives to empower the clients, particularly
the youth. By focusing on the youths who are the hope of tomorrow, the organization would be
CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

attracting more young people who are the potential consumers. Generally, through the research
question, the practitioners would identify that the creation of a good public perception or brand
image is key in the flourishment of any organization (Crane, 2008). This implies that the
practitioners would put more emphasis on the initiatives that improve the organizations’ public
image and attract even more investors.
Audience
The target audience for a research study about Corporate Social Responsibility are the
various practitioners in the organizations that fall in the business and marketing fields. This is
because such organizations interact directly with the surrounding community by offering services
for a purpose of gaining profit. Thus, the practitioners in the business and marketing fields need to
be aware of the significant impact of promoting the welfare of the community through CSR
initiatives such that they can move their organizations forward. Additionally, the practitioners in
those fields need to be aware of the possible threats that are likely to affect profit-oriented
organizations that do not carry out any CSR initiatives. Therefore, all the practitioners in various
organizations ranging including the Managers, Marketing Directors, Human Resource Managers,
etc. are the target audience of this research topic. This is simply because these practitioners can
utilize the result from this study in ensuring that their organizations succeed in the market
environment by attracting more potential customers and investors.
Why I’m interested in the answer to the research question
My field of study deal entails more of management and interaction with clients from
different backgrounds. Since I would be working in organizations that offer services directly to
the public, identification of how to create a good relationship between the organization and the
CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
9
public through CSR initiative is very important. Moreover, the identification of the impact of
creating a positive image for the organization through the provision of the economic initiatives in
the society would be beneficial in equipping me with good management skills of moving the
organization forward. Lastly, determining the impacts of the empowering the youths economically
on the organization is also fundamental since the young generation are the determinants of
tomorrow.
Conclusion
In summary, the organizations that aim to succeed in any competitive environment should
not focus on making the profit only but should offer a portion of their revenue towards improving
the life status of the surrounding community. This would improve the brand image of the
organization and give an advantage over its rivals. Therefore, the CSR initiatives that empower a
bigger portion of the consumers such as the youths are key in the flourishing of any business in
the present world.
