Purnell’s model of cultural competency – Domains and Influences
Learning Outcomes
1. Apply Purnell’s model of cultural competency, including cultural domains as it pertains to various populations.
2. Summarize the religious beliefs, spiritual beliefs, and folk remedies or alternative therapies that influence health care for diverse cultures.
3. Apply the concepts of cultural factors that influence health and illness of Hispanics/Latinos and Asian/Pacific Islanders.
Introduction
Students will examine cultural influences related to religion and spiritual beliefs, which comprise part of patients’ heritage. Purnell’s cultural competency model encompasses global, communal, familial, and personal perspectives that can affect the patient’s health care. It is important for nursing professionals to understand that the twelve domains of Purnell’s model are interrelated and do not stand alone. This model provides the framework for a thorough health assessment, including culture in order to provide competent care.
