POST-LAB: LABORATORY 4
Show all work for full credit.
1. If too much heat was applied to your hydrate and the salt began to decompose, how might this
affect your results?
2. You added water to your dessicant salt once your experiment was concluded. Why? What did
the results of that test tell you?
3. In order for your mass measurements to be accurate, the crucible must be completely cooled.
Why? What effect would a slightly warm crucible have on your measurements?

B. ldenury and expiam sources or error or assumptions made
during the experiment. Explain reasons why the yield or purity of
the product do not correspond to 100%. Be specific in your
comments. Use chemical intuition – only chemically sound
explanations will be accepted.
C. State what was learned from the experiment, tie in the concepts
learned in the laboratory with concepts discussed in lecture.
(Look at the objective of the experiment). Make sure you cite
any resources you have used.
6. Post laboratory Questions
Answer any post-laboratory questions. For math related questions,
show all of your work. You do not need to include the question or
statement. Number the post-laboratory questions.
7. Citations
Any ideas you got from other sources, including the lab manual,
must be cited. APA style is preferred.

CHM 101 Format for Formal Lab Report Dr. Rosenfeld
Laboratory
Report
The laboratory report must be typed. Prepare graphs using a
spreadsheet such as Microsoft Excel. When you use graphs or tables
from a spreadsheet, use table or figure headings and units, even if you
have to neatly letter them in by hand. Write in the third person.
Avoid using the words “L,” “we,” or “you” when writing the report.
(Example: “I heated the flask” should be restated as “The flask was
heated.”) The lab report is due at the beginning of the following
laboratory period. For each laboratory period a laboratory report is
late, a point will be deducted. Late laboratory reports will only be
accepted until 3 laboratory sessions after the laboratory completion
date. The laboratory report consists of the following (Please use these
headings for each section of your report.):
1. Title Page
Include CHM 101 006, the name of the experiment, your name, date
the experiment was performed, and your partner’s name(s).
2. Objective
Describe in your own words the objective(s) (purpose) of the
experiment in one or two sentences.
3. Procedure
This should be rewritten in your own words in a way that anyone can
follow it. Don’t write it in steps, write it as a paragraph.
4. Results
The Results section should include the information below, presented in
an organized fashion.
Data and Observations: Report all measured data and calculations with
appropriate units and significant figures. Include any important color
or phase changes that occur.
In experiments with an unknown sample, it is essential that you record
your unknown number.
Figures and Tables: In many experiments results are best presented as
a graph or in a table. However, you must also describe the figures and
tables in words for this section.
5. Discussion
A. Summarize your results and conclusions for the experiment.
B. Identify and explain sources of error or assumptions made
during the experiment. Explain reasons why the yield or purity of
the product do not correspond to 100%. Be specific in your
comments. Use chemical intuition – only chemically sound
explanations will be accepted.
C. State what was learned from the experiment, tie in the concepts
