Step 3 – Write goals, a schedule & rewards
To prepare for this step, read “Change to a New Behavior” on page 13 in Chapter 1 of your text.
Goals
It is important to set up goals and rewards when making a behavior change.
Goals and rewards provide:
Small achievements to
work toward
Positive benefits for
completing goals
Motivation to achieve the
behavior change
Most experts recommend using SMART objectives. Refer to http://topachievement.com/smart.html
and http://www.wikihow.com/Set-SMART-Goals for more information on developing SMART goals.
Choose five mini-goals that will help you work toward your long-term goal. In the table below, write
the five mini-goals.
Schedule
Achieving your long-term goal will take time and it could be weeks,
months or even years before you achieve your end goal. Work toward
achieving at least one of your mini-goals by the end of this semester.
Remember that this schedule needs to be realistic so don’t try to push
yourself to complete the goals beyond what you are capable of achieving,
either physically or mentally. In the table below, write the dates by
which you are aiming to complete each of your mini-goals.
Rewards
Finally, choose rewards for each of your mini-goals. Focus on what truly motivates
you. Hanging out with friends, getting a new outfit/video game, taking a walk:
anything that gets you going will work! Avoid using food or alcohol as your
reward. For example, rather than getting a cookie for reaching a mini-goal, maybe
you can try a new activity with your significant other. Or, rather than buying a case of
beer as your reward, you get to go hang out with your friends. Be sure that your
rewards not only motivate you, but also promote your new, healthy lifestyle! In the
table below, write the rewards for completing each of your mini-goals.

Great job completing the BMP – Part 2! Save this document in a .doc, .docx, or
.pdf format and turn it into the dropbox on D2L. Now it is time to begin working
toward Part 3. You have your plan in place so get started! Get your resources
together and work towards achieving your first mini-goal. During Part 3 you will write
a reflection, so as you begin the process, write down your thoughts and reflections.
Also, evaluate the plan you made. Is it too ambitious? Not ambitious enough? Do you need to reevaluate your goals, timeline or rewards?
