ESSAY TIPS: IMPORTANT!!!
Many times, all of us (including myself!) have asked why assign essays? After all, at what point in our lives will we be asked by our employer to compare and contrast the make-up of Virginia and
Massachusetts Bay Colonies or analyze the transition of the 13 colonies into the United States? Below are some reasons why writing essays are helpful beyond the four walls of the classroom.
Essays are a useful tool for finding out if you can sort through a large body of information, figure out what is important, and explain why it is important. Essays challenge you to come up with key course ideas
and put them in your own words and to use the interpretive or analytical skills you have practiced in the course.
Instructors want to see whether:
• You understand concepts that provide the basis for the course
• You can use those concepts to interpret specific materials
• You can make connections, see relationships, draw comparisons and contrasts
• You can synthesize diverse information in support of an original assertion
• You can justify your own evaluations based on appropriate criteria
• You can argue your own opinions with convincing evidence
• You can think critically and analytically about a subject
What are some useful tips for answering essay questions?
Always answer the question in the introduction.
To clearly signal your answer, use the language of the question. For example if your question was “How do the goals of liberal and socialist feminism differ?” you could
begin your essay with:
“The goals of liberal and socialist feminism differ in three main ways …”
This approach makes sure you answer the question, and makes the exam easier to grade.
Make sure you structure your essay
Introduction
-An introduction should explicitly state your answer and the organization of the essay. For example:
“The goals of liberal and socialist feminism differ in three main ways. The first is that … The second is … and the third main area of difference lies in the … This essay will argue that although these
differences exist in approaches, the practices of liberal and socialist fen nism have become very sim r”.
Body
The Body of your essay should include:
-supporting material
-appropriate details for your answer.
differences exist in approaches, the practices of liberal and socialist feminism have become very similar”.
Body
The Body of your essay should include:
-supporting material
-appropriate details for your answer.
-Make sure you structure the body of the essay as you indicated in your introduction. Use transitions to tie your ideas together. This will make your essay flow. If you feel you are losing the plot, go back
and reread the question and your introduction.
Conclusion
-In
your Conclusion, re-answer the question and refer briefly to the main points in the body. Show HOW you have answered the question. For example:
-“In conclusion, it is clear that although liberal and socialist feminism originally held differing views on how to attain their goals, a realistic assessment now shows that their practice has become very
similar. This is most clearly illustrated by … (give your best example and end the essay).

Finally, the best tip I can give is to imagine that you have been asked this question by someone who has no idea what the answer is
but desperately wants to know. What would you tell them? What do you think is essential for them to know?
Essay Prompts

Hello everyone,
Below
you will see the possible essay prompts for the Unit 1 Essay. Be prepared to write 500-600 word essay addressing all aspects of these prompts. Information for
these exams must come from your textbook alone. Do not incorporate any outside material. I have also added a page under Unit 1 titled “Essay Tips.” I encourage you
all to take a look at that before writing your essay.
1. What were the forces that led European countries, and particularly Spain, to explore the New World? What was the impact of European exploration and conquest
on the population and environment of the New World? Finally, what were the ramifications of northern Europeans (such as the French, Dutch, and English)
failing to find cities equivalent to Tenochtitlan anywhere in North America?
2. What were some of the key differences between the establishment and organization of Massachusetts Bay Colony in New England and that of Virginia in the
Chesapeake? What factors other than religious commitment help explain the success of the Puritan colonies in Massachusetts Bay? Finally, which society was
more democratic in its original formulation, the New England colony (Massachusetts) or the Chesapeake colony (Virginia)?
3. In Chapters 4 and 5, you read about Virginia’s (and other English colonies) emergence as a slave society. What forces propelled these changes? What kind of
world was made by the emergence of slavery? Finally, what kind of relationship was developed between humanitarianism and slavery?
